George, Clippers rally late, beat Pistons 142-131 in OT
On Monday night, the Los Angeles Clippers defeated the Detroit Pistons 142-131 in overtime thanks to 32 points from Paul George and a late comeback from a 14-point hole in the last 3:34 of regulation.
After falling behind 126-112, Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue benched his starters in favor of a lineup including Luke Kennard, Terrance Mann, Amir Coffey, Nicolas Batum, and Moses Brown, who went on a 16-2 run to close out the game. With five seconds remaining on the clock, Mann made a jump shot that tied the game.
Credit those guys for always being prepared, Lue said. They started playing with a sense of intensity. It was crucial that Amir and Moses, who hadn’t played in the game, came in and contributed the way they did.
Then, in the overtime session, Los Angeles outscored Detroit 14-3.
Ivica Zubac contributed 12 points and 15 rebounds as Los Angeles continued its eight-game winning streak over Detroit. A total of seven Clippers scored in double figures.
Bojan Bogdanovic scored 23 points to lead the Pistons. He also made the team’s lone 3-pointer in the last eight minutes. For the weakest team in the NBA, Detroit, Isaiah Stewart tallied 21 points.
Dwane Casey, coach of the Pistons, reflected on his team’s comeback from 15 points down in the third quarter to a comfortable lead with three minutes remaining. “They gave up; we need to figure out how to win when that happens. I’m happy of how close we came to beating one of the top teams in the West, but ultimately fell short.
